A SOLDIER'S TALE - Storytellernigeria.com
The wind of life has blown me away from my home, the weather condition is too harsh for my comfort...Yet Patriotic I stand, for the good of my nation. The drive to be on the war frontline with a rifle in my hand, shooting at those who hate the good of the Land seems stronger than whatever unfavourable state I could find myself. That tenacity remains unshakable, the passion is forever igniting. I am prepared for the worst that could happen, yet hope thrives from within... Yes, Hope... The word "HOPE" is now my daily bread. Now perfectly understood, since it is remains that steady will to see the next day, and the next day, until I see my newly married wife again. The hardship is severe, and the commonest things, seems to be the biggest luxury.
Dried out with thirst, water seems so impossible to find, not to talk of a decent meal..I guess that will be heaven in itself. The water bottle in my left pouch has been empty for 2 days. The cold freezes my bones at night and the scorching sun burns through my Helmet at mid day. Wild animals are domestic meat and the only soothing sounds I hear, are the chirping of the forest birds.
The battlefield remains my playground, blood shed is now as common as a mid day movie, death zaps from all angle..taken friends and teammates, yet in the face of death I stand with my head high, my face with that fierce frown, my heart beating fast, not as a sign of fear, but that heavy anxiety to kill all those who try to take me down. My life is not mine, it is for my country..The sacrifice I can offer might take me down but will keep the ones I fight for, in a land of peace.
Yet in all these, I know there's a God. The little verses from the new testament where my wife's picture lay, is what waters my hope. I stare at reality in a whole new way, hoping to see the next new day. No one can kill me, because my God keeps me..The circumstances I've seen, might have killed my emotions, but my hope is unshaken, and remains Alive.
